Ourense is around 30 mins drive away. This city is very good for shopping. We suggest you take an opportunity to wander around the old historic centre. The arcades of the Plaza Maior is a great location to stop and have a drink. Another suggested site to visit is the archaeological museum.
Just below the historic centre are the As Burgas hot springs. The temperature of the mineral water is around 67 º with a flow rate of three hundred litres per minute.
The cathedral is an unexpected delight. The design of the main door ( O Pórtico do Paraíso) is similar to the Pórtico de la Gloria. However this one is Polychromatic.
Ourense is known as the city of bridges. There are 5 main bridges, dating from the Roman times (A Ponte Vella ) right up to the Millennium Bridge (Milenio). There are a lot of other bridges dotted around the city and most have fascinating design details.
Do not forget that this city has a large pedestrian shopping area plus an indoor shopping mall called Ponte Vella.
We also recommend a visit to the thermal baths in Ourense, more details on this website under activities.
This historic town is the centre of the Ribeiro wine region. Apart from the wine there is much to interest the day visitor: churches of various styles, the old castle and a fortified wall. In the historic centre much remains of the Jewish quarter.
Locations near to Ourense and Ribadavia include Castro de San Cibrán de Lás; one of the largest Celtic settlements in Galicia (photo right), plus the functioning monastery of Santa Maria de Oseira.
Our nearest town; there several historical sites which may interest visitors. Colegio de Nuestra Señora de la Antigua. This impressive building holds paintings by El Greco and Hugo van der Goes. The Monasterio de San Vicente del Pino is today a Parador. The wine interpretation centre is well worth a visit as it explains the history of wine-making in the region. There is a small shop selling wine products from the Ribeira Sacra too.
Off the beaten track one can visit the Pazo Molinos de Antero. Its key role was the collection centre of tobacco income and other taxes, so the house was very secure and still retains the ingenious security system.
